Spring Thaw Social - 2016
Another fun get together on April 16th 2016. We had a good turn out with engines, cars and people.
After a fantastic potluck lunch there was a Yankee Swap. The "Steam" Book was the gift to be grabbed.
The meeting at 1pm was very productive with getting ready for the Yankee Engine-uity Show in June.

Railroad Hobby Show 2016
Every year late in January or early in February, the Amherst Railway Society holds its Railroad Hobby Show at the Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds (The home of The Big E) in West Springfield Massachusetts. More than 23,000 railfans and public attended the Show each of the past three years.
The event features real life railroads and scale model railroads, historical societies, travel agencies, art shows, flea market dealers, importers, manufacturers and photographers. Modelers' exhibits will display outstanding handiwork on layouts ranging from the tiny Z scale which fits on a coffee table to a monster 80 foot N-Trak system.
The CMSGMA club has displayed their Cagney train for the past two years at this show. The response has been very positive. Below are pictures from the 2016 show.

Waushakum Live Steamer - January 1, 2016
New Years Day was the annual train event for the Waushakum live Steamer club. A few of our club members attended this event to see the trains and take a ride around the grounds. The day was cold, windy and icy but there was still a good turn out.

2015 Chili Cook-Off
Saturday December 5th was a beautiful day for the Chili Cook-Off. A warm sunny day brought several people out to the clubhouse with engines in tow. Some of the members went home with raffle prizes and a full belly of chili. This year's chili cook-off winner was Charlene Desjardins with her sweet maple chili.

The Cagney Train Project 2015 - Has Begun!!

CMSGMA acquired a 15” gage Cagney steam train in 2001. Our goal is to have the train running around our club house for rides and steam education. We will restore the train, set up rail bed and track around the club house property and build a train shed to drive the train into for winter storage and maintenance. We are applied for the founders and/or Heritage grants from the Amherst Railway Society to help with the initial $10-$12,000 cost of replacing the locomotive boiler. Unfortunately, we did not receive the grant this year (2015). We will need to raise funds to complete this project. We estimate the total cost of the entire project to be approximately $48,000.

Project Outline:
Phase 1 - Acquire Land for Cagney train set-up.

we have now but will not be big enough in the future.
Our plans for this train had always been to purchase our own property for the club, and set it up there. However, on the clubs current property at the Orange, Ma airport, an old building was just demolished. This new area will now allow us to stay in our current club house and start the train project. We would use it as an educational tool for members interested in steam.
Phase 2 – Locomotive Restoration
This part of the project will most likely run concurrently with the rail bed prep and laying track. The locomotive boiler is unfortunately unrepairable. However, a reproduction (S) stamped boiler is available from Wasatch Railroad in Wyoming. The current engine has been successfully run on air and will require minimal work. The drive wheel bearings have been remade. The club also acquired many sections of rail that still needs to be assessed for condition and footage. Additional new track may need to be purchased. We will know more once the track layout is established.

Phase 3 – Train Cars
CMSGMA did not receive any train cars when the project was acquired. We will need to fabricate these cars from scratch using period photos and plans. We do have some chassis pieces to start from.

Phase 4 – Train Shed
The final phase will include a small structure to house all the finished components. A modest building that the Cagney could drive directly into for storage and maintenance without removing if from the track. Right now we have a small garage on the property to use as needed. This will accommodate what

Work Day - Sat. Nov. 15th 2014
Another successful workday to bring the club closer to having the Cagney train on the property. Randy Lawrence brought the equipment needed to cleanup the remainder of the hanger building debris. Meanwhile a crew of volunteers cleaned and organized the inside of the garage. This will make space for initial train workdays. Additionally, another crew of volunteers worked on garage roof repairs. Thank you to all who helped out!!

Spring Thaw Cookout - Sat. April 19th 2014
Another good turn out for the Spring Thaw cookout. We lucked out with a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the high 60's. Dean was frying a turkey while Stephen and Karen were on the BBQ with kielbasa, burgers and dogs. Engines were thumping in the yard and scale models were on tailgates for all to see.

Winter Tailgate Social - Sat. Dec. 7th 2013
We had a good turn out. Warming up around the bonfire, we had lots of laughs and stories. Several people brought engines to run. We had the "Chili Cook Off" and the winner was Sandy Messer with her delicious home made chili. In the afternoon we went into the club house for the meeting and warmed our toes. We elected new officers: President Stephen Upham, Vice President Mike Toomey, Treasurer Grover Ballou and Secretary Karen Upham. We all agreed this was a fun day and we will have more of these in the future.
